Georgioupolis is part of the district of Apokoronas. It is known for its hospitable residents, its picturesque villages, and the nature. It’s worth’s visiting all villages, each with its own tradition, history, customs and beauty. The villages: Vrissés, Exopoli, Kalamitsi, Vamos, Gavalohori, Kefalas, Fres, Stilos, Neo Chorio, Armeni, Plaka, Tzizifès, Pemonia, Paidohori, Vafès as well the beach villages Kalyves and Almyrida are nearby.
Also in the other parts of the area there are lots of sightseeing spots which are worth visiting, either on foot, by car, bus etc. In addition to that, if you are a fan of sports, there are many opportunities you shouldn't miss. For example: horse riding, (mountain) biking, running, walking and of course all kind of water sports are available in the village or nearby.
A few examples of interesting options are: Kournas Lake. It is the only freshwater lake in Crete; the famous gorge of Samaria; Spili and Argiroupoli with it’s waterfalls of spring water and nearby Argiroupoli village formerly known as Lappa.
More Photographs off these sites you will find in the Photo Galarey.
In Georgioupolis there are rental offices to hire cars (airport service is available!), motorcycles, quads or bicycles. There are tourist offices where you can book excursions. From the main road there are very good connections by (air conditioned) public bus to the towns of Heraklion, Chania, Rethimnon, Sfakia and beyond. At the central square you will find a taxi stand.
We want to point out one unusual attraction:
It’s impossible to explore a large part of the island independently. There are many roads that are inaccessible for normal vehicles. That means that you never will see those parts of the island. The only possibility to visit an inaccessible area is by making a safari tour with a four wheel driven Landrover.
We made the tour and our surprise was great to see lots of beautiful parts of Crete where we never came before!
